What is Cecropia Studios?

Cecropia studios is a Linocut and mixed media art studio that is heavily nature inspired. Here at Cecropia Studios we bring our love of the outdoors to you! Our nature inspired designs are always changing and being added to, so follow along to see your favorites! Our current product line is garden themed and includes moths, butterflies, insects, and botanicals. This garden theme was inspired by our upcoming event, Lewiston GardenFest!

What is Linocut?

Linocut, also known as Lino printing, is a printmaking technique that is a variant of woodcutting. In Linocut a sheet of linoleum is used as a relief surface. A design may be traced, hand drawn, or transferred onto a piece of linoleum. Each design must be a reverse image so that when printing, the design faces the correct way. When the image transfer is complete the design is cut into the linoleum surface with linoleum cutting knives. Once the cut out of the design is complete, the linoleum sheet is inked with a brayer and then pressed onto a piece of paper or fabric either by hand or with a printing press.

The Artist

Hello, I'm Michaela Pantano, creator and artist of Cecropia Studios. I started Lino cutting in January of 2024. Over the last few months, I have been working on skills and creating new designs while finishing my Entrepreneurship degree at GCC. I found out about Lino printing last September while looking at business opportunities for one of my business classes. I've always wanted to create designs for products, and I originally was going to take up digital art and graphic design. However, as time progressed, I realized how much I liked creating things by hand and how that aspect would be missing with graphic design. So, I did my research and found Lino cutting, and it had all the aspects I've been looking for.
